Keeping Your Business Alive

So you have a home business. Your product(s) or service(s) is unique and it’s an instant bestseller. You make sure that your resources are ample to keep the business going. After all, you want your customers satisfied. There are a few things that you should always keep in mind when it comes to inventory.

Have a variety of your goods but not too many. Customers are always on the look out for an assortment of goods before they actually make purchases. It is probably innate for people to make comparisons before they decide what suits their preference. Thus, it is essential that you have a variety of goods available for them to choose from. However, having too many choices is not also advisable. It can result to some products not being bought at all, which could mean loss for you.

Monitor the “hot” items. Goods have different stock levels. By properly observing which products get to be purchased more often gives you an idea of what level of inventory should be set for that item. Knowing the safety stock level of your products would result to an increased inventory turn-over for optimized profit.

Take advantage of wholesale prices. Suppliers always provide discounted prices for volume purchases. It is advisable to take advantage of this to lower your cost per item but never overbuy. You may end up not being to sell the product at all, leaving you with losses to suffer. That is why, you have to monitor your products properly.

Get rid of obsolete items. Customers have their way of knowing whether your goods are there for sometime. They are always on the look out for something new. If you think that a particular item has been on your shelves for a time, offer it at a discounted price. Furthermore, when your goods have expiry dates, it is better to have them “on sale” before the said date. It is wiser to reduce your profit for these items rather than not to have them sold at all.

Maintain an accurate recording system. Regardless of the size of your business or the number of products you sell, or the type of records to be maintained, it is important to maintain an accurate recording system. There have been numerous cases of inventory mismanagement rooted on the improper and careless recording of inventory data. Depending on your preference, you can do the recording of inventory control. These days, however, even for small businesses, computer software is made available to answer for any of your inventory problems. It is advisable then to invest some of the computerization of your system. This may mean additional cost but the software come in handy for your billing and collection as well.

Proper inventory management entails tow aspects: on one hand is the ability to know what, when and how much to purchase a particular good; and on the other hand, to make sure that once purchased, these items would produce profit. Being able to satisfactorily reconcile these two factors will surely assist in making your business successful. You surely would not want to stock up all those inventories for the rest of the year, would you?
