Internet Networking Opportunities

Networking is a business activity geared towards the increase of profits. It is not merely the shaking of hands or the exchanging of business cards. It is the building of a list of contacts. These contacts can share ideas, information, and resources. They can also give referrals and become clients.

Networking does not happen only in well-planned events. It can happen among few friends sharing coffee and snacks. It can be done using the phone and the mail. And it can be conducted in cyberspace. To find networking opportunities in the Internet, here are the steps that an entrepreneur can do:

  • Using a search engine, type the specialization of the home business. It can be “wireless communication” or “ceramics”.
  • Alternatively, the related profession may be used. For example, an entrepreneur with a home business of plants may type “gardening.
  • Or, the entrepreneur may type his target market, such as “baby boomers” or “pet owners”
  • Once the results of the search appear, the entrepreneur must skip the “sponsored links” and the commercial advertisements. He must proceed to the section featuring the detailed results.

In the detailed results, the home business entrepreneur will encounter web pages of groups of people that open doors to networking opportunities. In these web pages, he will find bulletin boards where he can read comments, ask questions, and even answer questions. This last action is an effective way of introducing oneself and one’s expertise to these groups. Some examples of these groups are:

  • Academic and professional associations – Schools and professional associations have event calendars and bulletin boards that are open to non-members. Back issues of newsletters of these associations can provide a good idea of what is being valued by the group.
  • Online communities – These websites provide directories of professionals, event calendars, and articles. Some of them have bulletin boards open to non-members. And some conduct live chats in which non-members are invited. These websites also have links to other resources.
  • Online publishers and other publications – The makers of magazines and newsletters also have online communities in which the public has the opportunity to join.
  • Job sites – These sites include job opportunities for the freelance or contract professionals, which describes the home business entrepreneur.
  • Prospects – These are companies that will benefit most from the products and services of the home business. They also have news about future events and an organizational chart showing the executives and their contact information

Networking need not consume a lot of time traveling from one place to the other. It can be done at home, using the Internet technology.
