Tips to get you started in the planning
- Make sure that you can run the business in your home. Most products or services can be provided from your home. Make sure you investigate local zoning and ordinances to verify that your business will be allowed in your home. There would be nothing worse than being all setup and find out you will not be able to run your business from your home.
- Declare any conflicts of interest you feel may become an issue. If you are planning on starting up your business while still being under the employment of another firm, make sure there will be no adverse effects from this.
- Create a section of your home that will be dedicated to your work. Keeping your work and home environments separate will assist you in scheduling time for both. You will need office supplies to stock your new office: Desk, chairs, computer, fax machine, copier, internet access, telephone line, phone, paper supplies.
- Make sure to registering your company with the proper legal bodies. You will need to make sure you are fully registered with your government agencies for tracking business expenses and incomes for tax purposes. You should also look into getting a resale number if you are planning on reselling products. As a business, you will not be required to pay tax on those items.
- You must plan for success in your home business. You will not succeed unless you have a plan. Set obtainable goal and meet them. Make sure you always know how your business is doing and what tasks are available to complete.
