Make the most of networking events
Why are you going?
Before the event, take some time to think over why you are going. It is obvious that you are taking time out of your schedule to take part in the event. Is this worth it, the time you sill spend away from the office to take part?
Some planning needs to take place to better assign your time to these needs. Make a list of some good questions that you could ask. When you find a person with the expertise you are looking for, ask then for assistance on a solution you are working on, they will be flattered with the attention to their skill set.
Focus on a few good contacts.
The temptation is there, run around the event and hand out your card to as many as possible. Is this really that efficient? Do you really have the time or the need to follow up with 150 contacts in the next week?
Not ever person you meet will be a beneficial business contact.
Focus on the individuals you feel you will be able to provide a service to. Ask in-depth questions of them and take a few notes. Get back to them within the next few days via email. Try to find some trade articles that they may find interesting on the topic you discussed, mailing them this information along with a hand written note. Not many people take the time to respond with a note, taking the time for this small gesture will ensure you are distinct from others trying to contact this lead.
Be professional with your business card.
Only initiate a card exchange with individuals that you feel you will provide a follow-up contact with. Make sure your business cards have up to date contact information on them and provide some text indicating what products or services you provide. With such a low cost on business cards these days, there really is not reason you shouldn’t have a professional looking card.
These events and others will afford you the opportunity to meet many other business associates. You have a great opportunity to meet and discuss with contacts that have like interests. Making the most of these events will provide you with additional business prospect to create profit for your business in the future.
