Word-of-Mouth – Diversify your Networks
To be successful at word-of-mouth marketing, you need to be known in the community. Being an active and visible part of the business community. This means being an active participant in professional and networking groups.
These groups will allow you to meet other professionals in your industry and beyond. Make sure you diversify your group involvement also. The more you are seen being involved with in the community, the better you and your company’s stance will be in the community.

- Get to know people in other industries.
The information and learning process will allow you to better sell to individuals you might not have originally thought would be interested in your product and services. As you learn about the other industry’s needs, always keep in mind how you would tailor your sales strategy to fit the needs they express. - Increase your participation in the groups.
Don’t just go to the meetings, help out when needed. Specialized committees will help you get to know some of the members better. They will also help increase your knowledge in the specialized subject you are involved with. - Be a vocal member, and state you views.
Make sure you and known in the group. Don’t go to overboard in this though, don’t want to come off as a know it all. - Don’t oversell yourself, be modest.
There is not need to boast your services at every turn. Networking groups are to get known in the community, not just to sell yourself or your services. Continually talking about yourself or your business will only alienate you from potential leads and business associates. Getting to know the other members is also an important part of networking groups. - Listen to other members.
Listen to not only what they say, but how they say it. Try to pick up on any industry jargon they might use. Always ask yourself what you could do to better sell to this market or person. - Ask appropriate questions.
If in the group environment or more one-on-one, make sure to actively ask questions to show interest and learn more. Remember, the more you know about the community, the more you will know about the marketplace. - Offer your goods or services.
Donating your goods or services to events that the business group puts on in the marketplace can create some real buzz for you and your company. Maybe donate some items to a charity auction event, or offer your time at the next fundraising event.
You need to take an active role with word-of-mouth marketing to get the marketplace taking about the beneficial aspect of you and your company. Get your face known, and synonymous with integrity. Create a web or network of contact through out different industries, and know what they have to offer. Keep in touch with your network and make sure you send referrals their way as much as possible.
Building a business network takes time, keep with it. A great business network is a vital part of word-of-mouth marketing and success.
